Pregnancy Week 30/31: Beating the Bloat!

17 July, 2015

Pregnancy bloating. It happens! Due to an increase in hormones, mainly progesterone, and a lot less real estate in there, our digestive systems start to slow down as we move through our pregnancies.

In our non-pregnant days, over-the-counter medications would alleviate these issues. But since a lot of these medications are not safe for baby (including Gas-X!), we can no longer turn to them.

As a result, I have sought out some natural remedies to beat the bloat and keep things moving.

Below are the top 5 natural remedies that I have come across.

Fenugreek seeds

I had never heard of this cure, which stems from Indian culture, prior to doing a little research. Soak a handful of fenugreek seeds in a glass of water overnight, and then in the morning, discard the seeds. Sip the water to help reduce gas and bloating. Trust me, it works like a charm!

Fiber-rich foods

Getting enough fiber in your diet is a no-brainer to keep things regular and moving, as it pushes waste through your digestive system. Eating lots of fruits and vegetables, such as apples, beans, and lentils, will boost your fiber intake and rid your system of unnecessary waste.

LOTS of H2O (with lemon)

The last thing you want to do when you feel bloated is drink fluids. But drinking water is actually one of the best things you can do to push extra air and whatever is causing bloating through your system. Stay away from carbonated or sugar-loaded drinks and stick to straight H2O.

Adding lemon to your water will give it an extra punch, as it acts as a gentle laxative and natural diuretic.

Probiotics

Part of my daily routine is taking a probiotic most mornings. I use USANA’s portable probiotic packs to make sure my digestive system is getting all of the healthy bacteria and gut flora it needs to keep things moving. This is especially essential while travelling, a time when things tend to slow down even more.

Exercise

Even if it’s just going for a short 10-15 minute walk after dinner, exercise gets everything in your system flowing and moving. So naturally, staying active and moving will reduce bloating and constipation.
